Package Design for BabyBibi Brand
BabyBibi approached GrafikaVision to design a colorful and attractive package for their new product line of Multi-sensory toys and a set of colorful cloth books.
GrafikaVision worked closely with BabyBibi to understand its brand strategy and target audience. The products were still in production so we didn’t have any product photos to use for the packaging design. We decided to use a combination of character illustrations, bright colors and brand guidelines to create an exciting design that would appeal to young children and their parents.
Our graphic design process
Before we move into any design direction we take a close look at your customer. Who is buying the product? What does your customer need to feel to purchase the product? Does it need to evoke nostalgia or have a straight to the point minimalistic approach?
Based on BabyBibi market research, their ideal customer is an educated parent looking for an early development toy. So we knew the design had to instil trust that this product was made with their child’s development in mind.
We also knew that parents are often short on time, so we needed to make the design easy to understand and attract attention instantly.
What information goes on the product package design
It is important to define before jumping into a creative process what info is needed on the product. This will help save time and iterations later on. We like to put package information into three buckets:
1. Mandatory info such as product warnings. company info, barcode, certification, etc.
2. Branding info such as messages that reinforce branding messaging and call for action
3. Product info: information on how to use and about the product. In many cases product info also comes as an insert or a brochure in the package along with the product.
Packaging Design Information Hierarchy
What information would someone need to know to buy your product? In most cases, branding messaging is at the top of the list because it’s what will first catch a consumer’s attention. Branding messaging may include a slogan, logo, or even just a certain color palette.
In the case of BabyBibi packaging design, we wanted to capture parents’ attention with bold graphics and peak parents’ curiosity with bold graphics. Parents would then look for more details about what the product is, how to use it, and any other important details.
Packaging materials – how is the package will be manufactured or printed?
In the early stages of design before visual design is complete it’s important to decide on what kind of materials the product will be packaged in. Some recycled materials can not have colorful prints so if you plan to have a bright package it’s important to know the limitations. If the box will be shipped, it is also important to consider the thickness of the box and the size and weight of the materials. How much the package will cost? A minor change in the package may significantly increase or decrease its cost.
For BabyBibi we wanted a box that would hold all of the parts securely and look presentable on store shelves. After some research and testing, we decided to go with a thick cardboard material for the boxes.
Essential questions a package designer will ask you:
1. Who is your audience and what are you trying to achieve with the design?
2. What relevant information needs to go on the design?
3. What is the package information hierarchy (a system that will help organize information on the design in an easy digest)?
4. What kind of packaging material / type of box will work best for your product and budget?
Finally, moving on to graphic design
Creative ideas brainstorming
Since BabyBibi had clear and established brand identity guidelines in place, our packaging designer had a great starting point to work from. BabyBibi’s style is playful, curious and happy. So we used those characteristics as inspiration for the design.
Multi-sensory bean shapes product is a new product on the market. The visual design had to communicate what the product is about. Since there were no photos of the product we decided to incorporate character shape designs on the package. As a result, the parent could easily see what the product is and how it works.
On the back of the package, we included a short description along with some playful copy to engage the parent. One of the biggest challenges was that we had to fit 5 different languages on the package. Since the key to a good design is to keep it simple and easy to understand, we decided to use color-coding on the back along with well-structured typography. The color selection was based on BabyBibi branding guide.
The result is a unique and fun design that stands out on the shelves and communicates the key message of the product.
When we were designing a package for Wings Cloth Books we decided to take a different approach. Since this product contained two books about wings our package designers proposed to display graphics of wings on the front package to entice the potential customer. From a distance, the package looks bright and abstract but as you come closer you notice the wings of a butterfly, a plane, a bird, etc. The title in the middle says: “Touch my wings” and when you turn the package around you would learn more about the product. This is a perfect example of how an intelligent packaging design will lure the customer to pick up the package off the shelf.
After the graphic design of the packages was completed, they were sent to the print house for a pre-production sample. The production of print samples allows seeing the package printed and catching any inconsistencies in the design before large-scale production. This is an important step to avoid costly mistakes.
It’s always exciting to see the design finally completed in a physical form!
If you are looking for a graphic designer and planning to design a package for a toy or any other product, keep the following in mind:
• Your package should be designed to stand out on a store shelf. It should be eye-catching and memorable.
• Your design must be consistent with the overall style of your brand.
• Make sure that your design can be easily reproduced by the print house.
• Don’t overload your package with text but also comply with product package regulations. Missing mandatory package information may result in costly delays.
• Your package design should be easy to open and close.
• Consider including a promo brochure in your product package to compliment your product’s key features, share your brand story or tell your customers about other products you may have.
• And finally, take into account the environment when choosing materials for your packaging. Designing eco-friendly sustainable packaging is not only a trend but also a responsibility.
