Instagram Feed Redesign
With over 1 billion users worldwide, Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms today. And, with its unique visual format, it’s also one of the most engaging.
If you’re a business owner, you know that using Instagram for marketing purposes can be extremely beneficial.
But what if you’re not a designer? How can you create high-quality visuals for your Instagram feed?
Most modern smartphones have a quality camera built-in which makes it very easy for anyone with some basic composition knowledge to take great photos for their feed. However, if you want to make your feed stand out, using professional-quality design elements is a must.
Instagram Feed Design for @Chambersofhealth
When Matt from @Chambersofhealth approached Grafikavision he was looking for a visual design that would reflect his brand’s ethos and style, but also be easy to use daily.
Creating design for an Instagram feed is a highly customized process. Like fingerprints, each feed design has a unique style that represents the type of content, aesthetic, and overall tone of the account.
To make things easier for Matt, we designed a brand Instagram grid template including 12 individual photo posts, 6 story covers, 12 topics and an overall layout. Single image templates were also set up in Canva, which gave him the ability to quickly generate content that adhered to the new consistent Instagram aesthetic style. As a result, the entire feed can be swapped out and customized as needed, while remaining on-brand.
How does the process of Instagram feed design work?
Instagram Discovery meeting
The first step is to meet with the client and learn more about his/her business and what makes their Instagram feed unique. The discovery meeting usually lasts 1-2 hours. We would ask questions such as: What is the business’s mission? What is the brand’s theme? Who is the target audience? What are the business’s values? What kind of high quality content does the target audience want to see? What kind of brand’s personality do you want your Instagram feed to showcase? What kind of content performs best on his/her Instagram at the moment?
Competitive analysis and gathering best Instagram feed ideas.
After the discovery meeting, we would take some time to analyze the client’s Instagram competitors. We look at their Instagram accounts and review what kind of content they are posting and how often. This gives us a good idea of what is currently working in the industry and what kind of posts the target audience wants to see.
Identifying 12 Instagram Posts – Content Topics
Once we had a discovery meeting and did some competitive analysis, we would start to brainstorm content topics for the Instagram posts. During this process we come up with a list of ideas and then send them to the client for approval. The content topics are topics for the individual posts that would repeat in a predetermined pattern. This helps the client to plan content for the future and ensures content structure and consistency.
Instagram grid layout feed mock-ups
After the content topics are approved, we start to mock up what the feed will look like. This includes creating visuals for each content topic and determining a color palette.
Color scheme plays an important role in social media because it is one of the first things people see when they come to your profile. Like they say: “there is no second try on the first impression” so the goal is sure the feeds visual design matches with brand’s personality to attract quality followers.
We present the client with 3 designs to choose from and make revisions based on their feedback.
In Matt’s case, we picked up a happy color palette to reflect a joyful humble feeling. The highlight covers are one of the first things people see on your profile page so it’s important to make sure they are aesthetically pleasing and represent your brand well.
Instagram Feed – final touches
Once we have the final designs approved, we finalize the graphic elements and colors.
The next step is setting up a custom template in Canva so the client has full control of the template and can use the design to create posts independently. We like to give clients flexibility and ownership of their content.
Last Touch – Instagram Profile Icon
Any individual or business should have a strong Instagram profile icon that represents their brand. The icon is the first thing people see when they visit your profile.
The icon will be showing for your followers above in the Instagram Home tab on the top among other people’s profiles. The icon has to be recognizable and visible. One of the common mistakes some brands and businesses make is using an image of a logo in a small size or a photo with a lot of details in the background. Think about what would grab someone’s attention and make them want to learn more about your business, product or brand.
Instagram Design Style Guides
Style guides help to keep a consistent aesthetic style. This is especially true for businesses with multiple employees who are posting on behalf of the company. A style guide will help to ensure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to the overall look and feel of the brand’s Instagram feed. For Matt, we created a style guide with fonts, color palette, content posts topics and Instagram feed design structure.
When it comes to Instagram design, there are endless possibilities. Different grid layouts and filter options make it challenging to stick to one style. Instagram feed design will make it much easier and save a lot of time and ensure you’re building an engaging Instagram account.
